a City that gave a crap for what the residents want.
Imagine if you can I know it’s hard, but imagine we had a Mayor that didn’t lie to us. Imagine back to the Headlee Override if the Mayor didn’t have to lie to the residents imagine if he didn’t need to use the first responders and the elimination of them to scare the residents of this City. Imagine if he didn’t tell the taxpayer of Dearborn Heights that with the Headlee Override he would save our first responders and that includes the dispatchers. All of that done to get the Headlee Override money to bail out this City because we have a Mayor who didn’t see what the whole world saw. The economic meltdown. Imagine if he would have listened years in advance when then-Councilwoman Janet Badalow was pointing out the fact that the City’s fund balance was dwindling. When she pointed out that State Shared revenue was going down. Year after year I listened as she tried to get the Mayor to pay attention he never did.
Imagine if we had an administration that when he first was approached by Dearborn with this idea for a consolidated 911 dispatch center. If the Mayor (double dipping dan) would have come to the residents held public meetings several of them. Imagine if he would have sent a survey asking us what we the taxpayers wanted. Imagine a Mayor who would have come to the City Council of Dearborn Heights just once in the two years he was meeting with the City of Dearborn. If he would have just said I’m meeting with them about consolidating our 911 dispatch center. Imagine a Mayor that didn’t say at a public town hall meeting about 911 dispatch the only town hall meeting held. That the savings he was getting if you want to believe there’s a savings when all is said and done. That the savings will go to giving raises to employees who haven’t had a raise since around 2010.
Just imagine you had a Mayor that didn’t give some if not all department heads their 10% back before the City is back open five days a week. Remember the 10% was what the employees were asked to give up to save the City. The Headlee Override was the residents ‘give’ to the City to keep it afloat. Now all these years later the City is still closed one day a week many of the department heads who took a 10% cut have gotten them back and are still only working four days a week. The Headlee Override is still being paid by the resident. Contracts are open back up and are being negotiated as I write this post. Did the City Council finally get someone at the negotiating table to represent what they were asking for? NO. The Mayor hired on his own two lawyers out of the law firm that already works for the City. These lawyers don’t report to the City Council as the council wanted they report to the Mayor’s office. Again City Council is locked-out.
Having a good imagination is a good thing to have when living in Dearborn Heights. It’s about the only thing that we the residents can rely on. We can imagine a better City. We can imagine a Mayor that cares for all residents. We can use our imaginations to see our City with a future and what our City could be. We can let our imaginations run wild with the possibilities of what we could have if we had a new Mayor running our City. Yes, the imagination I dare say is what has kept many of from giving up long ago.
