Who Is The Elected Mayor?

Silly question, right? Not so silly considering what happened this past week. The assistant to the Mayor giving overtime to the DPW workers without the Mayor even knowing about it. Not so silly when you consider the fact that the assistant to the Mayor negotiates all contracts in the city. What else does the assistant to the mayor do without his knowledge?

Not, so silly when the ATTM can come and go as they like and her boss the Mayor say’s nothing. What assistant to the Mayor can discipline workers in the city. Her words not mine she said them at a study session. The ATTM can disregard the council members new directive on parking the taxpayer paid for car for over 2 weeks. No, not a silly question, when the ATTM acts as if she is the Mayor over-stepping her position at every opportunity. No, not very silly at all when the ATTM states on documentation that she only uses 15 miles of personal use of a city paid for car for a 4 month period of time. A normal boss would have looked into the mileage used every week. Considering the fact that the ATTM does not own a car and has not for the past 6 years.  Last, but not least not so silly when the majority of the council thinks the ATTM runs the city. Not everyone is capable of self-regulation I sometimes wonder what would happen if the Mayor had to start doing the majority of the job just like normal people do.

  1. not that i ever heard of any bids to save the city money – like i said this is a monopoly with the shop doing the work and the city THIS IS A GREAT QUESTION FOR COUNCIL TO GIVE US HONEST ANSWERS like that is gonna happen

  2. I have heard a lot about this place. You are correct. Same cars, same people. It really does make you wonder, doesn’t it? There are plenty of other auto shops in the city that would be thrilled to have the city’s business. Probably even at a lower cost. It doesn’t make sense. I wonder if this has ever been put up for bid.

  7. The city employs 13 dispatchers. Is the healthcare savings you mentioned from city employees paying an additional 9 1/2 percent of their healthcare. That should be quite abit of savings

  8. there should be 16 dispatchers i think i think there are 12 left fromwhat i understand i do know there is overtime sometimes 2 overtimes daily and that is alot of money i am sure this is something that would be on the budget

  9. Then he would fall under the police officers union or is he in the AFSCME or is he under a different union. How many dispatchers are there? I thought there is 3 or 4 if you have 3 or 4 and they have to answer the phones 24/7 I can see a lot of over time be.

I know nothing about dispatchers. To my understanding the AFSCME union workers have not been given a monetary raise in 6 years. This information comes from several city employees. If you do not mind me asking what department does your brother in law work in..

  12. hello marge maybe you could explain as to why the city only uses matts auto on van born . i have been told once again ” this is always how it has been ” for years and years looking to save money in the city why arent there bids to work on city cars ? it is pretty amazing that you see the same cars at matts ( I live by there ) is this a problem with his fixing his mistakes? i do know we have other auto shops in the city and it may be nice to share the wealth– the city wants businesses to stay how about giving them some of the business — i do know for a fact that a shop at ann arbor trail and telegraph tried to get some of the city business over 4 years ago but was told that the city only uses matt’s . i think this is something worth looking into – perhaps the other auto businesses could save the city money . just a thought

  13. from what i understood from a couple of employees i was told that they didnt get any raises at all for police fire or any city workers – my brother in law works for the city – all i hear is all the overtime that the 911 dispatchers are forced to take for the last few years — from what i understand there has been alot of monies paid out to that

  14. Sad resident,
I’m not sure what you see in my post that would indicate that I’m a city employee. Sorry to disappoint you, but I am not. I am just an educated resident that has serious concerns with things in our city that are going on and things that are going to happen.
After looking over the budget, I questioned these “supervisor” positions in the police department (on the blog). I believe I said that there are almost as many supervisors as there are patrol officers. They need to put those so-called supervisors back on the road.
Sorry you voted no on the override. You posted: “I realize that we are going to have cuts however we were going to get them anyways.” True. But these cuts are going to MUCH deeper if it doesn’t pass. We can just agree to disagree.

  15. I did not know that all Detective are Sgt., but I recently saw a copy of the new fireman contract and talk about heavy on top. They will have promotions including renewing the $80,000 plus Deputy Chief position with minimum staffing levels. Are small city does not need a Deputy Chief. Each fire station will have on duty everyday a Captain, a Lt., 2 pump operators (which is a Sgt) and 1 firefighter. The ATTM will say that they took a 10% pay cut, but read the contract because they can sell free hours that the city is offering them back to the city once a year for cash. All bosses working a shift?…how did council approve this. I believe at the end of the contract they will also receive a 5% and 6% raise.

You are right the money will not be available until next August, but they still have to make the cuts and to my understanding from council members what they have to find is anywhere from $700,000.00 to one million those are the up to date estimate as of last week.. Now what will be needed next year is something completely different. The fact that cuts are going to be made with or with out the HO are not in question. The council has said over and over again that the city will have to make more cuts. I just wish they would be working together with the administration to put together a plan of action. I think considering that everyone was blind sided by this that now is the time to put together a plan in place. That is what I would be doing anyway

  21. I don’t know if the ATTM took a 10% pay cut. But either way we will never know the truth. All I know is what I believe in my heart that she has gotten away with more than most people could have and not get fired. I just don’t know why it is the way it is. Either we are all wrong about her, or she has something over on the Mayor. How can someone go from tending bar to the position she has with extra power she should NOT have.

  22. Facts are facts if it passes the soonest the money will be available is next August. They will have to make cuts regardless. You say 1 million others are saying 5 million . Some are saying 8 million Does anyone really know whats going on here? I doubt it. Seems numbers are thrown out for cause and effect, whatever way the wind is blowing. Until someone can show me the problems and how they intend to correct them. I am a no vote.

From what I understand if the HO does not pass cuts will be made almost immediately what those cuts will be remains to be seen. I know there was a meeting on September 1 to discuss ideas for cuts and cost saving measures. Since then however there has been nothing I am not sure if there is going to be a mad dash the day after to lay out plans on what needs to be cut,. but cuts will have to be made.. Right now the city must cut 1 million maybe a little less depending on Health care savings but cuts will have to be made. The city does need money and it is in trouble we may not like how we got here or the way it was handled (I sure don’t). Facts are facts and the city is in need that is a fact.

You are right about the roads they are in bad shape and they will be getting worse I’m afraid.

  25. If a city with 36 million dollars at its disposal is going to sink. Something is very wrong. The city is only 11 square miles and has 57,000 residents 30% of which are children. What does it need a million per resident? If the city can’t handle all the things you say will stop on 36 million . What good is the taxpayers kicking in another 3.4 million going to do? The city is half way to being Hamtramck now. I don’t know what they are spending all the money on but city services except for police and fire have declined over the last couple of years. The streets are in such poor condition I am afraid the first snow plow will take what is left of the streets. Don’t believe me..Take a tour down John Daly from Ford road turn right on Wilson check out both sides of Wilson turn left on Amboy turn right on Northmore and follow it around until you come to Amboy again. Go really slow so you don’t mess up your tires. They spend more money on attorneys than fixing the streets. To me it is a matter of spending money wisely not give me give me give me. Passing the HO will only be the start of the give me more. I don’t fall to scare tactics.. The sky will not fall and the powers that be will just have to be more responsible.

  26. Voting “No” will only “sink the city” as Anonymous has stated. You think things are bad now? Just wait. Please do not bitch when this city turns into Hamtramck. Please do not bitch when you call for an ambulance and it takes them 45 minutes (or longer to show up). Please do not bitch when your house is being broken into and you are low priority on the DHPD list (if they show up at all). Please do not bitch if your streets are not plowed, your streets are not swept, all of the recreations centers (including senior centers) are closed, city hall is open ONE day a week (and the list goes on and on). I WILL NOT BE THE PROBLEM. I am voting YES. I wish to save this city. I DO hold the mayor responsible for a lot of the problems, but I WILL NOT turn this city into Hamtramck out of spite!!!!

What ever she is doing she has been allowed to do by her boss. He is untimely responsible for what she is or is not doing giving someone all this power is very dangerous. We have always had an assistant to the Mayor councilwoman Horvath was the assistant to the Mayor for Canfeild never ever did she do what is being done now. If she had done a third of what this assistant has, she would have fired her. One thing for sure a committee must be formed from now to get ready for the 2013 election or for recall.

  31. No, it would take a lot more than that to convince me to re-elect him. (I’d find it hard to vote for a person who would get up and walk out of a Council meeting to avoid hearing a Citizen speak.)

If he did fire her, though, it might be an indicator of his future plans.

I hope you’re not thinking that if he gets rid of KK, he would then be OK to run for re-election. Of course, I agree with you that she is a liability – to US, but not to him. Do you remember West Wing when the people working for the president would say – I serve at the pleasure of the president? Well, she serves at the pleasure of the mayor (no pun intended). HE is the only one who can fire her. From what I’ve been able to get from all these people writing in and those who seem to work for the city, it sounds like he’s never there so that’s what he gets from her. After all that’s going on now, he would be foolish to run again. But even if he got rid of her, I would hope he wouldn’t have a chance in H E – -!

The Mayor would be crazy to think about running in 2013 he has to much against him.. The ATTM is just one of many, many issues with this man and I am not even talking about the budget shortfall there is so much more. In the end the Mayor is to blame for the ATTM she is only doing what she has either been told to do or allowed to do.

The excecutive secretary job was defined I did write a post when they posted the job that the description of the job should be what the assistant is doing. To my knowledge the assistant job does not have description. I think it is up to each Mayor to define what they want their assistant to do. In her sworn deposition she stated that she does everything.

Where are City jobs defined? Is the information available to the public?

Are the Assistant to the Mayor and the Executive Secretary BOTH independently defined positions within the Mayor’s Office?

(Or was the Secretary hired to make up for shortcomings in the ATTM’s skill set?)

  42. I had a conversation with a councilman in which he told me that he had a meeting set up with the mayor. The mayor’s assistant called the councilman and changed it. The mayor called him, a litle irate because he had shown up for the meeting but the councilman hadn’t. The councilman told him that his assistant had changed the meeting, foolishly believing that it was at the direction of the mayor. When you first posted the article about the overtime, Kathy, I was going to say that perhaps she had given them overtime because she is having an affair with someone who works at
the DPW. If there’s one thing I’ve been able to glean about “our little Krissy,” it’s that she doesn’t do anything unless it benefits her in some way. I read an article about Dave Bing firing a member of his staff because he couldn’t have even the idea that something illegal was going on. First we have her negotiating the union contract even though her “friend” is head of that union. Now we have her giving overtime to that same department even though we’re making cutbacks. Get it, Mayor? Her actions may not be illegal but once again she’s put herself above everyone. No matter what rules we lay down, she seems to think they don’t include her. Of course I read that her “friend” stepped down when she was negotiating the contract but give me a break. You don’t think there were people who were saying or thinking – we’ve got this in the bag. You know who she’s having an affair with don’t you? I’m so tired of saying – fire her, fire her, fire her but come on MR. MAYOR. FIRE HER!
