Looking back…

Looking back the Mayor had this to say in January of 2011,

To help cut the red ink, last year the city took steps to defray skyrocketing employee health care costs. In July, all municipal retirees were merged into a single health care plan

Then in the fall the police officer’s union agreed to enter into the same basic plan. Shortly thereafter, Paletko placed all non-union employees into the same plan. Two weeks ago the city’s largest union, AFSCME, entered into the plan.

  1. I think $60,000.00 a year is way too much for his assistant! Don’t you? I really doubt anyone thinks the $35,000.00 position is what was ment when said overpaid. And the mayor said he is willing to work harder and longer? Well why should he be worried about that, he has 2 people still not cut from his budget!

  2. And we won’t because of your hatred of the Mayor. Here we go again. WAKE UP, it’s not about him! If you think you don’t have a say now, just wait until the state takes over. Will you finally be happy?

I agree I am sick and tired of hearing this city sucks it does not, it may be looking a little ruff around the edges. Yes, we are all responsible for what is going on here and the biggest responsibility that we the voter hold is the fact that we have not paid attention to what has been going on.

  5. By the way, Dearborn Heights does not suck. It is made up of a lot of good hard working people when they have jobs. We have our whiners and takers but they are in the minority. There is a lot of personal responsibility involved in making sure it does not suck, including electing the right individuals and paying attention to what they do when they are elected. Our responsibility does not end at the voting booth.

  6. The staff is hardly overpaid. You need to check out what the employees actually make. You’re CRAZY if you think they’re being paid more than they are!!! They have cut the departments to the bone. One person is doing the job of 2 and 3 people. So, $35,000 a year to do the work of 2 and 3 people is well worth it in my book. What would you expect someone working for the city to be paid?

And Dearborn Heights doesn’t “suck”. The city is becoming this way because of people like YOU who don’t even leave a name and aren’t even proactive. Quit complaining and do something to make this city NOT “suck”! If you can’t….. MOVE!

  7. Rose,

If I recall correctly the police were the first to agree and take a 7% pay cut plus a hit on there health care. Don’t know were you are coming up with a 7% increase. I spoke to one of our officers and I was informed that their pay raises over the past 7 years have been 1%, 1%, 2%, 2%, 0, 0, and a minus 7%.

  9. How do you get a 7% percent increase thru binding arbitration when you are 2 Million in debt. Unheard of …. somebody really dropped the ball.

  10. Is this the same mayor that suggested that we spend thousands of dollars for picture mosaics for city hall? Are these the the same police that went to binding arbitration and got a 7% increase and now really are only taking a three percent cut over last year because of the increase? You act like entering into the plan is punishment but it still is more than most taxpayers get.

I am sorry I am not more sympathetic.
