Take Away The Cars…

At the CCM on May 24 Councilwoman Van Houten brought a resolution to stop employees from taking cars home at night. This is something that the council has been trying to do for years. She said that since she ran for city council she said that only the Chief of police, The Fire Chief and the Mayor should be taking home cars at night.

I thought the Mayor’s head was going to pop off his shoulders the first words out of his mouth were not I understand that we need to make some changes in-order to save money. He did not say I under stand the tax payers do not want employees to take home cars. No he did not say that, he did not say I look forward to saving the city money he said nothing even close to that.

What he did do the little bitter man that he is was point that finger of his turn red in the face and say this is irresponsible. You are irresponsible pointing his finger at councilwoman Van Houten. What followed was a typical Mayor tirade going on to say that the council was micro managing and this was not in essence their business. Something that Councilman Berry parroted right on cue no big surprise there. Councilman Berry started to lecture the council on the fact that their job is to trim the budget, well Councilman part of that is to save money anywhere you can including taking the cars from people to take home.

The Mayor, if you could under stand him after saying I do not know how many times that it was irresponsible that wait for it if the cars could not go home with people the council was jeopardizing the lives of the residents. He was not talking about the chief of police or the fire chief. He was talking about DPW workers who take cars home at night, because, from what I could tell something to do with a water main break’s winter and freezing. The residents are put in danger and the council was risking our lives by asking that the dam cars be parked at night.

What did the Mayor use as an example for the Parks and Recreation Department to take home their car’s? Well a light left on, he said that if there is a light left on at one of the buildings at a park then they have to get in their cars to go over there and turn it off. How in the hell is that jeopardizing the residents lives? A light left on is the reason for the taxpayers to spend thousands on maintaining these cars for the recreation department to take home. While most of the council was interested in saving money councilman Berry made sure to let all of us know he was meeting with a company that could manage the usage of the cars for the city. Yep hire a company to do this for the city spend who knows how much. I suppose that is not micro managing is it Councilman Berry? Oh no not at all. I thought the Idea was to save money?  Remember this resolution said that they could not take car’s home at night. Not that they could not use a city car during working hours. The whole idea was to stop employees from using these cars for personal use and let us not forget we have one in the city that does not even own a car. Ther only form of transportation is on our DIME their gas, their car insurance, and the maintenance of the car all on the taxpayers. This car was used by this person to go to their second job but that is not a violation at all right?

Councilman Berry kept saying that they (the council) can not signal out individual employees that is not right. Well the resolution did not say that a certain someone only can not take a car home. The resolution said no cars can be taken home Mr. Berry I guess you are more interested in keeping the administration happy, than worrying about how the residents feel about this.

Even the most advent supporter of the Mayor can not watch this meeting with out thinking to themselves that this is wrong. Not one person could answer the question of how many cars are taken home with employees not even the Mayor could give a number. He has a relatively accurate idea of how many car’s go home, but did not give the number. Having a relatively accurate idea is not the same as knowing down to the car how many are taken home. How many are taken home by the police officers how many taken by DPW and not to mention department heads some who live out side of the city.

In the end it was tabled to go for study session to give each of the department heads the chance to come and plead their case for taking home cars.

  3. I have a question for the council. Why does the head of DPW has a truck that we pay for with nothing on the doors that states that this is a dearborn hts city truck..I have bought it up to a couple council members and nothing has been done about it. Why is he any diferent because he is special? That truck has been seen in places that has nothing to do with us tax payers. Except that we are paying for all this. The mayor is always talking about other cities and what they are doing and wants to follow their ways but only when it is conveniet with him

  4. The city council meetings are the best reality tv show. To bad it’s only on every 2 weeks. i don’t like to watch reality tv, but these meetings are getting great.
love watching the heated exchange between the members of council and administration. it truly shows the TRUE COLORS of this administration, and what they are really all about.

I do not think the ordinance officer take home their city cars, and if they do that is a big problem. You are right we vote them in and then never pay attention to what they are doing once they get there. We never hold them accountable for anything I think we are part of the problem so many are not watching or asking what is going on.

No worries about the election every clerk that has run for that office has been the clerk while they are running the election. Not heard one thing about any issue with job getting done there.
As for lips they are not leaving can not beleive they would leave over one comment coming down, they do not give me the impression as the type of person to cut and run over that.
I hope what the assistant to the Mayor was doing off camera comes on the TV she was very disrespectful to the whole council, and CW Badalow said it best ” now we are going to get a lecture.” One council member told me after the meeting what do you expect look at how disrespectful the Mayor is.

Sorry you had to remove the post, and i respect that.
I’m sure there is a issue with the job being done there.
I also take issue with the fact that he will be involved in the next election process, and that makes me very nervous.
However, i hope Lips will come back to the blog, cuz the commentary is great!
Also, i would also like to state that i thoroughly enjoyed watching Marge’s commentary on the city council meeting, and her exchange with “Ms K. rewound it a few times, to listen to it again and again. it was great. Chickie…… ha! ha! That was the best!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. I think I have finally found the words to respond to the latest crap that has been dealt. Listen up, readers.
I am just the generic citizen, I vote, I do things with and for our city. I have been involved with the city since the 1950’s, made it my business to try to find out and be involved with what is happening in my area. I have experienced or watched people get the one-two-punch from the “powers that be”. I want the best for my family and friends, my children, my grandchildren, and I will do what I can to help things happen.
This blog has allowed us the avenue to speak without the issue of “there they go again” or “who do they think they are”. It would be nice if everyone would speak with knowledge and fact, but it is open to everyone.
So, someone didn’t like what I said on this blog. Did I lie? Nope. Did I have a legitimate reason for posting? Yep. Was I cruel? Nope. Did someone read my post and find out that their irresponsible behavior is being noted by many? Yep. Did that someone get upset and act like a loose cannon? Yep. Did what I had to post concern the city council or the mayor? Only to the point that a person who had been appointed/hired for a job that my taxes go to support is acting in an irresponsible way. Do I have the right to speak up? Oh, yes.
My personal note to the one(s) who whined is, the people who live in this city are sick and tired of so much of the irresponsible activity that is carried on, right in front of our faces. These activities are being brought up, discussed, and shared. This blog has been made public by the blog, Kathy has provided the “avenue” for the average citizen to respond to the irresponsible behavior, and by it being a public blog, it is open to every person who wants to speak up.
Instead of whining to the many people (who listened and comforted you, and then chuckled behind your back) it would have made more sense to go to the blog, and defend yourself. You didn’t. Like I said, were they lies? What you have done now is make others see you for what you are. Your whining has urged Kathy to remove my posts, as well as other people’s. Talk about freedom of speech. Now this blog is no longer the avenue it was meant to be. Now the very basics of this blog has been removed along with any controversial posts.
Sorry, Kathy. You may decide not to post this one as well, but that’s ok. I hope that the irresponsible behaviors are stopped or even curbed, but you won’t hear from me about them. I will do my best to make sure that the citizens who are not aware will be made aware.
Citizens, watch and listen, try to make the right decisions when you vote. Know that we can’t solve every problem, but by voting we can weed out the most irresponsible ones.
    Bye Bye from Titanium Lips.

    citizens at all.
    Thought the meeting entertaining.
particularly when the mayor had his 2 year tantrum.
