The city of Dearborn Heights has a new clerk for the next seven (7) months that is. Mr. Walter Prusiewicz was voted in by the city council with four (4) votes only after councilwoman Horvath changed her vote so the council could move on.. Councilman Apigian refused to vote for any of the applicants saying that he thought the system was wrong and that the city is trying to save money. Now the city will have to pay two people to do this job the clerk and the new clerk. Councilman Apigian said that he did not think it was necessary to do all of this if the clerk was willing to stay. Councilman Berry said that this was the way it is done what the charter say’s has to be done.
At one point when councilman Apigian did not vote corporation counsel said that he could not abstain from voting that it was not allowed according to the city charter. It is important to note here that after councilman Apigian abstained from voting the Mayor leaned over to corporation council and was talking with him right after that corporation counsel made his announcement about not being able to abstain from voting.. This brought on a discussion that was soon forgotten and deemed unimportant because it was now a moot point because councilwoman Horvath changed her vote. A woman got up and asked to have them look into it because it was an important point that needed to be looked into two council members said that they do not remember ever seeing that in the city charter. Corporation counsel said he would find it and write an opinion on it at no charge to the city.. Well you should not charge the city you are the one who brought it up. I like what councilman Apigian tried to do tonight and I concur with Mr. Muskat when he said it took a lot of guts to do it.. Yes it did to stand up and say this is a bunch of bull to stand up and say with your none vote that you disagree with this and you do not think the city should be spending this kind of money..
I will go back to what I have said more than once since this whole thing started the Mayor should have crossed the corridor at city hall walked into the clerk’s office and said we need to work something out here. I understand you want to leave, but can you stay until after the election and through training of the new clerk and you can still have the early out make it retro active.. No that could not be because we all know how the Mayor feels about the clerk and how bad he wanted to get rid of her. Well she will soon be gone I welcome the soon to be new clerk and wish him well.
The clerk’s office is independent of the Mayors office it is a separate department with an elected official running it. The clerk is elected by the residents of Dearborn Heights the clerk’s office does not answer to the Mayor they run their department the way they want to.. It should be kept that way the clerk’s office is the keeper of the records of the city. The clerk’s office is in charge of elections in the city, the clerks office is the answer center for most people who have a question. The clerk’s office handles many things, but the most important thing they do are elections in the city. The first election our new clerk will be in charge of is the school board election in May.
Eve the new secretary for the council was at the council table she will be replacing Mary who I will miss so much. Mary, Donna and Judy our Clerk are all leaving at the end of March. Eve is not new to the city she is coming from another department and she looked very comfortable in her new position tonight. So a warm welcome to Eve and congratulations on your new position.
