Still, there are challenges ahead. Heights officials recently negotiated labor contracts with two of the city’s largest employee unions, the police officer’s association and the local AFSCME chapter.
The contracts upped out-of-pocket health care expenses and froze wages, Palekto said. And the situation is the same for non union employees, he added.
The possibility of layoffs was front and center during the negotiation process.
“I indicated to (the unions) that without concessions there will be layoffs,” Paletko said. “But I also told them if they’re willing to work with us I will do everything in my power to protect jobs with those unions.” Full Story
